Second Chance free essay sample

â€Å"I regret to inform you that you were not chosen as one of the 18 students to go on to the Emerging Youth Leadership trip,† said Brady Rhodes. I could feel my heart plummet into my stomach. My mouth went dry and I completely froze, not knowing what to say or think. â€Å"However, you are our first male alternate if anyone drops out.† I sensed the faux reassurance in his voice. Who in their right mind would pass up a free, month-long trip to Central Europe? I did not want to be the alternate, I wanted to go. I put all of my abilities and efforts into getting accepted. The countless hours I’d spent practicing what to say in my interview were wasted. My mind was flooded with questions. â€Å"What did I do wrong? Why wasn’t I chosen? Who was better than me?† I have always strived to be the best. Only this time I did not have a second chance. I’ve only gotten two B’s in my high school career. They were white hot daggers of failure to me. I felt the same way with this. The only thing I could do was learn from it and move on. That is exactly what I did. A trip to five European countries would have been a blast, but I wasn’t going. My summer was open and thousands of possibilities awaited me. Maybe I could get a job; people hire desperate 16-year-olds. Basketball season was over, but my school had an off-season team during the spring. We were playing to gain chemistry and flow with each other. We also were a very small team. As just under 6 feet, I was our biggest guy. We needed all of the practice we could get. This is why our coach signed us up for a basketball camp at Mesa State. Mesa state was more than just a camp; it was a week of nothing but basketball and hanging out with your friends on the team. Our team needed this more than anything. I was very excited to go with our team. The weeks passed by and summer was coming fast. One day, with a week left in school, I got a voicemail to call Brady Rhodes. I didn’t want to think about someone not going on the trip and jinx my chances. I called, using every neuron in my body to contain the anxious rumble in my stomach. â€Å"This will either be a great opportunity for you or a bitter disappointment,† he said. â€Å"One of our students must drop out of the trip. Are you still up for going to Europe Ari?† Hundreds of feelings flowed through me at once. Then came a sinking feeling, the Mesa State basketball camp was during the same time. â€Å"Can I get some time to think?† I had a great battle of choices going on in my head. That night I debated and debated. A thought came into my head. â€Å"This is Europe we are talking about! I can’t let this experience slip away.† I decided to go! In less than a month I would be in Central Europe on a leadership exploration. I have the rest of the year to practice with my team. I would add Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Austria to the list of countries I have been; the United States was the only one so far. On my trip I experienced many things and expanded my being. I became a strong leader through activities such as; a community project for the Roma people, city challenges and navigating in a different country not knowing the language, leading a group on a hike in a new environment, and becoming a family with 17 complete strangers. Going on this trip was the best experience of my life and the best choice I could have made. Ever since my trip, I have been thinking in whole new ways and I am always expanding my horizons. I am now a more productive and prominent leader in anything I do. Whether I am leading my basketball team or a small group of classmates in a project, I lead them to success. I also learned; when given an opportunity to do something great, take it. I would have regretted not going to Europe. I don’t want to live my life with regrets of not going someplace, or not doing something awesome.

Modern Dance Figure Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Modern Dance Figure - Essay Example Among those who started such changes was Isadora Duncan who looked towards Greek culture as an inspiration to different movement forms and later danced with bare feet and simple garbs (van Rensburg) to make her feel more freely and control her movements that express the resistance and yielding of one’s self to gravity. Chopin and Liszt were dictated her choreography. Ruth St. Denis, a contemporary of Duncan on the other hand, sought ethnic and Asian dance style and later shared her talent and discoveries in Denishawn, a dance company she established with her husband. She taught and choreographed dance movements which were immortalized by the joint efforts of Katherine Dunham and Pearl Primus who continued to work on her style. Another contemporary in the person of Mary Wigman, looked to African and Orient culture where she widely made us of masks (van Rensburg). Towards the middle of the twentieth century, the second wave of modern dancers flourished in New York and were repre sented by Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman who danced with Denishawn and another dancer from the Wigman company. However, unlike their teachers who looked for external inspirations, they turned to basic human movements like walking, running, breathing, sitting among others and transformed them to aesthetic movements expressed in dances. Graham concentrated in the breathing process and improved her movements from there, using them as she indulged in the narrative structure. Humphrey on the other hand used the natural dynamic of human footfall expressing fall and recovery (van Rensburg). Twyla Tharp who came later, combined the styles of the aforementioned early dancers and choreographers with that of the ballet and social dances which is now largely reflected in the ‘modern’ modern dance. P. Diddy, one of the modern dancers nowadays, expresses the combination of the aforementioned dance styles in his dance movements. He is a living legacy of those who ca me before him who valued dance movements to express their thoughts and emotions. Diddy’s dance is under the genre of hip-hop and break dance, which reflects his expressions in his songs. Sometimes, Diddy just seems to be walking, a reflection of the second wave of modern dance perception who incorporated natural human phenomena in their dance steps. Most of Diddy’s steps are simple and basic so that he is criticized as one who cannot really dance or does not know how to dance. His skills in other ventures like business probably affected his patronage in the entertainment industry, coupled by his being linked to modern famous personalities like Jennifer Lopez. His dramatic and controversial lifestyle probably influenced his fame in the industry which is also basically reflected in his music and his dance. This made him a figure who young people could relate with, reflecting the life of a bad boy who freely expresses himself the way he wants to, going beyond the freedom one should have in doing anything he pleases, unmindful of what norms and people suggest. P. Diddy is able to reach out to the adolescents, strengthened by the effects of media and other entertainment figures, to express one’s freedom in whatever means one can have. The simplicity of Diddy’s dance is also an encouragement to those who are not skilled in dancing, or it

The four kinds of market-product strategies Essay

The four kinds of market-product strategies - Essay Example The four kinds of market-product strategies that organizations may follow depending upon the availability of their resources and requirements are: Same Market New Product (Product Development) In this strategy, an organization introduces the same product in the market that he is currently catering to. It is a type of product development that an organization does to retain and increase its potential customers by providing solutions that based on the identified requirement of customers. Same Product New Market (Market development) In this strategy, an organization takes the same product that it is currently dealing in to new markets, to turn its prospective customers into its routine and regular customers by identifying a need in that segment. It has much more to do with the identification of the right market segment and then offer them with the products from an organization’s portfolio. Same Market Same Product (Penetration Strategy) If an organization wants to cater the same market with the same product then it must have to follow the penetration strategy. It means organization will have to take the steps to increase its market share in the existing market and to follow strategies that will help organization to beat the competition. The most widely accepting activity that organizations do is to reduce the prices. The reduced prices will take the market share away from its competitors.

History and Description of a Subordinate Group Member Essay Example for Free

History and Description of a Subordinate Group Member Essay Throughout the history of North America, there has been one ethnic group who has given up almost everything to the European settlers. Land, home, resources, and dignity were stolen from Native Americans. The long history of the American Indian is being written, even today. Approximately forty thousand years ago, the earliest ancestors of Native Americans migrated across the Bering Strait from Asia on pack ice (Hoerder, 2005). The population rose steadily, and by the time the first substantial settlement of Europeans was established in the New World, Native Americans lived throughout the continent. In the search for more farmland, European immigrants quickly pushed the native population out of their traditional homelands. This migration began the crowding of other native bands, forcing eastern natives to move beyond the Ohio River, thus starting a series of relocations for the Native Americans that continued through the next two centuries. Less than fifty years after the end of the American Revolution, many of the tribes in the northeastern United States sold their land under pressure from the newcomers. Before 1850, these natives migrated west of the Mississippi River. If you traveled to Oklahoma today you would find the same bloodlines that once roamed the New England hills (Indians The Readers Companion to American History, 1991). Wanting to live apart from the natives and expecting them to remain controlled, reservations were established, including an Indian Territory (est. 1825) in present-day Oklahoma. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 was enacted to populate these newly established areas. President Jackson ordered the forced migration of Native Americans from multiple southeastern tribes. Approximately 4,000 Cherokee Indians perished in 1838-1839 on their 800-mile march, or during their succeeding internment. This tragic event has become known as the Trail of Tears. (American Indian Policy, 2002) Trying to Americanize instead of segregate the Indians, in 1887, Congress passed the Dawes Act, which broke up reservations and gave land to individual Indian families. The idea of the Dawes Act was to assimilate Indians by giving them land from which they could profit. What followed were laws, over the next few decades, which dissolved tribal governments and placed Native Americans completely under the jurisdiction of U.  S. laws (American Indian Policy, 2002). The reservation system is one distinctive aspect of the Native American culture that materialized from their relationship with other Americans. The United States has 310 reservations within its borders. The federal government owns 298 reservations and 12 belong to the states in which they are located. A total of 437,431 Indians resided on reservations or trust lands. That is approximately 22 percent of the Native Americans defined by the 1990 census (Shumway Jackson, 1995). The United States has proven itself unreliable on its policies and treatment of Native Americans. The government teeters between a policy of segregation, under which Indians are treated as a self-sustaining culture, and assimilation policies, which try to integrate Indian and European cultures. The United States acknowledged Indian sovereignty and established treaties with them. Unlike foreign nations, Indians shared the continent with the quickly growing nation who needed resources, and were quick to form treaties, giving Indians land rights and territorial sovereignty but repeatedly found ways to revoke those privileges.

Volunteers Should Not Be Rewarded Essay -- volunteering, benefits, rew

Nowadays you can volunteer in different type of places. There are a lot of various organizations that need volunteers. What you can do to help these organizations are help clean parks, go to a foreign country to help from a natural disaster, etc. These are just some of the things you can do at these institutions. When volunteering the question is asked if people who volunteer should receive benefits or a reward for offering their service. I believe they shouldn't because if you’re receiving a benefit it becomes like a part-time job it takes the point of volunteering out of the equation. It also defies the purpose of doing it on your own free will with the purpose of doing good and helping others. First of all the definition of volunteering is offering yourself for a service or you performing willingly and ‘‘without pay’’. If people were to get benefits out of it, it wouldn't be volunteering anymore. The reason people volunteer is for either personal reasons, the need to help others, or to make a change in their community as to make their community a better place. People volunteer for other reasons too it can be because they are forced upon by their parents or a school requirement, or they want to try something new because they have a lot of free time in their hands. Head of PhD George L. says there are risks when volunteers are rewarded or paid. He states "The precise distinctions vary , but the point of difference is that employees get paid for their work — volunteers do not. Pay a volunteer for his or her work and you've transformed the former volunteer into an employee — or at least you've created a plausible basis for that person (or perhaps someone else) to claim he or she is an employee of your nonprofit." another problem ... ...on since it can cause them a lot of troubles plus it can also affect how the volunteer performs if not rewarded properly. Rewards are ok as long as they are properly distributed and it won't cost the institution extra money since they are working for a cause not to lose anything. volunteering is the act of helping others and giving yourself up for a service without pay and I believe in that because it wouldn't be volunteering anymore if you include pay in the same sentence.
